Mushroomhead Wins Headbanger’s Ball Video of the Year

The clip for Mushroomhead’s “1200” has won video of the year honors in the 2007 viewers poll of Headbanger’s Ball, cable’s premier heavy metal showcase. Over 120,000 metal fans called in to rank the videos. The song is from the Cleveland band’s 2005 LP, Savior Sorrow, which has sold over 80,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. ... It’s a curious distinction. Last year, the honor went to Dir En Grey, a Japanese fashioncore band that has played the Family Values tour but showed no signs of major popularity in the United States. While a call-in system is subject to some manipulation, Mushroomhead’s distinction is less questionable. With a roster that includes Ministry, Mushroomhead’s label, Megaforce, has bigger bands to push – so it’s unlikely that an army of demon-dialing interns arranged for the award. And, like the Insane Clown Posse, the masked band does have the kind of rabid international fanbase that would take the time to vote for their favorite group. We hereby deem the award Not Bullshit. Check out the countdown here. Mushroomhead’s gory, grinding clip alternates live footage and conceptual images. It’s basically like the band playing a gig in a slaughterhouse, only they’re the cattle. – D.X. Ferris
