On the surface, Emery doesn’t sound all that different from any other screamo band. They croon, they shout, they play really loud guitars. They even write songs with ridiculously long titles, like “Return the Smile You Have Had From the Start,” “The Note From Which a Chord Is Built,” and “Story About a Man With a Bad Heart.”
But Emery's different, because Emery's down with Jesus. You may not know it from “Rock-N-Rule” and “The Party Song” – both from their new album, I’m Only a Man – but the Seattle rockers give props to the Big Guy whenever they can. You just have to sift through lyrics about partying hardy and how much girls suck. It's a wonderfully odd paradox that makes the band much more complex than their peers, and definitely worth checking out live. Plus, the excellently titled “Don’t Bore Us, Get to the Chorus” follows its own advice and brings the fat-free noise. -- Michael GallucciEmery performs at 7 p.m. on Friday, February 1, at the Agora, 5000 Euclid Avenue.
