Mic Check: Oakley Hall at the Grog Shop on Tuesday

Oakley Hall look like dirty hippies. But the Brooklyn-based sextet has more depth than that. On last year’s I’ll Follow You, they play a mix of rustic Americana and jam-band grooves. That’s not to say they don’t occasionally dip into peace-and-love rhetoric and stuff like that; it’s just that they’re tighter than most of the other bands they’re linked to ... On record, Oakley Hall seem a bit contained – like they’re just waiting for the big payoff that may or may not be on the way. Onstage, the four guys and two gals trade vocals, riffs, and an intriguing blend of singer-songwriter wispiness and chord-crunching sturdiness. Don’t let the beards and inbred looks fool you: This band rocks much harder than those banjo-plucking freaks in Deliverance. --Michael Gallucci Oakley Hall performs at 9 p.m. Tuesday, April 22, at the Grog Shop, 2785 Euclid Heights Boulevard in Cleveland Heights. Tickets are $12, $10 in advance, available by calling 216-321-5588. For a preview, listen to “No Dreams” below.
