Mic Check: The B-52’s at House of Blues on Tuesday

Ready to kiss your pineapple.
The last time the B-52’s released a record, George Bush was president. The album was called Good Stuff. And they sang a song about a “Hot Pants Explosion.” That was 16 years ago. Their new CD, Funplex, has a song titled “Keep This Party Going.” And there’s still a Bush in the White House. Little has changed, and that’s kinda Funplex’s point. Original member Cindy Wilson is back in the group, so the new album sounds pretty much like what you’d expect: The girls sing space-age harmonies. The burbling synths are straight out of a ’60s B-movie. And Fred Schneider chimes in with his usual nasally proclamations (“Faster pussycat, thrill, thrill!”) from time to time ... Funplex is indeed fun, but it’s also a nostalgic trip. And that whole path is better covered by the B-52’s live show – which is heavy on classics like “Rock Lobster,” “Love Shack,” and “Roam.” Hopefully, the next time they get around to making a record, there won’t be another Bush anywhere near Pennsylvania Avenue. --Michael Gallucci The B-52’s perform at 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 29, at House of Blues, the Palace Theatre, 308 Euclid Avenue. Tickets are $36 and $49.50, available by calling 216-523-2583. For a preview, listen to “Rock Lobster” below.
