"Class of 2008: It's my honor to be here. Please point me to the nearest keg."
It was only a year ago that Case Western law school officials landed themselves a great coup when Marc Dann, then a rising star of Ohio politics, agreed to be the school’s commencement speaker on May 18th of this year. But, of course, in the wake of recent sanctions against Dann’s Columbus frat house, the law school is shopping for a stand-in. According to an email sent to students yesterday from Law School Dean Gary Simson, the (soon-to-be-former) attorney general is taking a pass. ...
Subject: [lawstudent] Change in commencement speaker Dear Law School Community, I have been in touch with the office of Attorney General Marc Dann. The Attorney General has indicated that he wishes to withdraw as commencement speaker. I have already been in contact with another graduate of the law school, and I hope to be able in a couple of days to tell you whom I have lined up as speaker. Sincerely, Gary Simson Dean and Joseph C. Hostetler- Baker & Hostetler Professor of Law
Of course, Dann and the school are simply upholding the first and only rule of commencement speeches: They must be really, really boring. “It would have been awfully interesting to hear him speak,” as one student noted. It also would have made for some great heckling. – Rebecca Meiser
