Apex bar is the Enterprise Rent-a-Car of bars. (Yes, they'll pick you up)

It’s one thing for a nightclub to slash its prices as patrons simmer over high gas prices and supermarket bills. It’s another thing entirely to chauffeur them to and from the bar to get them to drink. And so it’s with great pleasure that we introduce (cue the trumpets) the Apex nightspot, where manager Johnny Cartwright is offering his customers free limo rides in his eight-seat Lincoln Continental if they’re too juiced to drive. “Come to the bar, and you don’t have to worry about getting home,” he says, causing us to stand and cheer for 45 minutes straight and alarming our fellow cubical farmers. ... Located near the corner of Lorain Avenue and West 117th, this down-home shot-and-beer joint – with a15-seat bar, four booths, and outdoor patio for smokers -- primarily caters to barflies who live within walking distance and favor its $2.25 bottles of domestic suds and $2.50 well drinks. To expand this customer base, Cartwright’s offering this deal: If you live within a 10-mile radius of the club, he’ll will pick you up at your home to shuttle you to the bar. Then he’ll take you home afterward. His only rule: you have to drink for at least two hours before he’ll grab the car keys. Better yet, the club has knocked off 50 cents on the price of every drink in the house until Labor Day. “People don’t want to drive when they’ve been drinking too much,” says Cartwright. “Besides, I want to get you to the bar as fast as humanly possible.” Apex is open between 5 p.m. and 2:30 a.m. nightly at 11633 Lorain Avenue. The rides are free by calling 216-476-1970. Bring your drinking shoes. – Cris Glaser
