When Cheryl Stephens was sworn in last night as the newest member of Cleveland Heights City Council, it was clear from some of the faces in packed council chamber just how many friends and allies she’s acquired in her years of working in development for various branches of county and municipal government. (She currently works for the county land bank). She was sworn in by her longtime political mentor, State Representative Barbara Boyd (D-09). State Senator Shirley Smith, who represents the 21st district which includes Cleveland Heights, was also in the house, as were Cuyahoga County Commissioner Peter Lawson Jones and Huron Road Hospital president Dr. Gus Kious. Other supporters included executive director of the North Shore AFL-CIO Harriet Applegate, East Cleveland Municipal Judge Sandra Walker and East Cleveland’s new mayor, Gary Norton, who was just sworn in himself Saturday. — Anastasia Pantsios
