Forgive us for not knowing exactly who Bill Hemmer was before today, we don't watch much Fox News after all. But various interweb sources say Hemmer is a co-host of "America's Newsroom," which sounds folksy and affable enough.
Apparently, at least according to a profile in the Washington Post today, Hemmer is a down-the-middle normal Midwestern guy and that is a key draw to the program. New York Mag summarizes why Fox loves him: he's cute!, he's from Ohio!, he's super cute!, he's super Ohio!
Kurtz and his sources talk about Hemmer's inherent Ohio-ness, and how it informs his reporting (from mistrusting New York elites to "blanching" when people swear on the air). "He's a wholesome reporter, he's from Ohio, he grew up in a large family, he has an innate curiosity, and he's likable," Fox News SSVP Michael Clemente told Kurtz. "He's almost an Everyman, a decent guy." And as anyone who watches Fox knows, he's cute!
No wonder people turn in, they're mesmerized by his cute Ohio charms!
And like all good Ohioans (ahem: LeBron), Bill doesn't forget where he comes from and how that should influence how news is covered.
Unlike media mavens whom he sees as being "locked in the Manhattan world," he remains conscious of his Ohio roots. "I hear from the folks back home all the time," Hemmer says. "Too often in our industry we forget about the rest of the country."
Don't forget about us, Bill! We won't be watching, of course, but we'll continue to do Google image searches for you!
