Vintage Video: Mayor Ralph Perk's Hair on Fire

WEWS has been pumping out great vintage video from its collection in recent months, mining their library for goodies and uploading them for the digital age.

Today, they produced video of one of Cleveland's more dubious and memorable moments: mayor Ralph Perk's hair catching on fire.

Cleveland mayor Ralph Perk cut the ribbon to open an industrial metals show at the Cleveland Convention Center. It wasn’t a typical ribbon or scissors to open the show, but rather a piece of metal to be cut with a torch.

The mayor donned an industrial coat and wore safety goggles as the dignitaries and attendees looked on.

A wayward spark ignited a bit of Perk’s hair.

This would have been an instant viral hit if Perk were mayor during the YouTube era.
