Like slow-rising pita dough, Alaturka (1917 W. 25th St., 216-298-9001, http://alaturka25.com) has taken its good sweet time to reach completion. It was originally slated to open this past summer.
But Ohio City's newest ethnic eatery, a Turkish restaurant, opened this week on W. 25th Street. Operated by Yashar Yildirim, who introduced Clevelanders to Turkish cuisine at Anatolia Café, Alaturka takes over the space formerly occupied by Kan Zaman (which moved down the street).
The menu offers the usual mix of Mediterranean-style soups, spreads, salads, and grilled meats. Red lentil soup and shepherd's salad share menu space with creamy dips like labna and hummus. There are stuffed grape leaves and sautéed baby liver. Fried appetizers include falafel and the ever-popular sigara borek, slender fried pastry cigars filled with feta and parsley.
Entrees consist of grilled skewers of meat, both whole and ground, made from chicken, lamb, beef, or a combination thereof. There are also shrimp kebabs on the menu. Doner, the Turkish version of gyro, is housemade and served in sandwiches, on rice, or with yogurt.
Alaturka is open for lunch and dinner.
