This double-shot of news out of Columbus dovetails nicely with our cover story this week, a deep-sea excavation into Ohio's troubling proliferation of teacher-student sex scandals.
According to the Dispatch, a pair of teachers from a Columbus middle school are in hot water because they had sexy-time on school property while they were supposed to be teaching The Giver or going over multiplication tables. Not to be outdone in stupidity, another district teacher is about to be 86'd from her job for letting students have their own group sexy-time under her classroom supervision.
The love affair between Anne E. Fulkert, a 29-year-old special ed teacher, and Jeffrey Poulton, a 43-year-old principal trainee, went on all last school year at Yorktown Middle School, the paper reports.
The two not only had relations during school hours (Fulkert told investigators the pair were “making out at school all day between periods and during lunch duty,” when the principal was off campus), but, disturbingly, the two used students as love-mail couriers. Because the most obvious thing to do when you're having an illicit affair at work is create a paper trail, Fulkert and Poulton articulated their passion in these documents.
“You are looking rather distracting again today. I better keep myself focused!” and “I need some more tongue!”, Poulton — a grown-ass man, we'd like to point out — actually wrote.
Things ended when Fulkert found out her older man was seeing another woman on the side. The administration seems to have known about the affair; the pair were warned about their relationship before the true scale was revealed. Poulton will be fired; Fulkert will be suspended, then resign after the school year.
At a different district middle school, social studies teacher Kathy D. Conner was showing the class a movie and must have checked out, because the paper reports she didn't catch a female student performing oral sex on not one . . . not two . . . but three classmates. When the sixth grade teacher got hip to what had happened, she simply filed a form and left it with administration, failing to take more aggressive maneuvers. That is a no-no.
That incident, combined with another from 2009 in which Conner, 56, also did not report allegations of abuse of a sexual nature in her class, will result in her firing. In the 2009 incident, one boy placed his penis on another boy’s head. The second boy was asleep, something Conner’s supervisor noted that she frequently allowed in her class.
