What To Do This Week: Get Out!

Clevelanders know better than to let gray skies dampen the fun. Here are three picks for weekday entertainment:

Monday August 27
Navy Week Begins: The Navy’s Blue Angels flying team is always a highlight for patrons at the annual Cleveland National Air Show, which takes place Labor Day weekend at Burke Lakefront Airport. This year it will cap Cleveland Navy Week, one of 15 such weeks the Navy is holding around the country to spotlight its mission and history. This year’s event also honors the bicentennial of the War of 1812. It launches today with a free welcome event at Cleveland Port Authority from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Other doings, including ship tours, Coast Guard band performances, and 1812 reenactments take place all over town all week. Tuesday August 28
LIfe, the Universe & Hot Dogs at Happy Dog: You wouldn’t expect to find the chairman of Case Western Reserve University's biochemistry department hanging out at the Happy Dog on a Tuesday evening trying to decide which of 50 toppings to have on his hot dog. But that’s where you’ll find Michael Weiss from 7:30 to 9 p.m. this evening. Every fourth Tuesday is “Life, the Universe & Hot Dogs” night, featuring a science-related program. Weiss’ is titled “Sex Determination in the City,” and it

deals with one of his main research focuses. His official CWRU bio says “Studies in sex determination seek to elucidate structure-function relationships in the HMG box of SRY and the DM motif, a novel Zn module.” Presumably he’ll put that into lay language on Tuesday.

Wednesday, August 29
Puppypalooza at Progressive Field: Yeah, the Indians are having yet another mediocre season. But you know who would be happy happy happy to be at the game, no matter how badly the team is getting trounced? Your dog, who’s always happy to be anywhere. And that canine glad-to-be-alive smile can be at your side at Progressive Field tonight when the Indians take on the Oakland Athletics at 7:05 p.m. Tonight’s Puppypalooza will feature animal-related vendors and activities, entertainment by “Jake the Diamond Dog,” and a pre-game on-field dog parade. Pooch packages are $30 for one human and one dog, with additional human tickets available for $15. Part of the proceeds benefits the Cleveland APL.
