Side Dish: Halloween for Grownups

Assuming you've outgrown the trick-or-treating stage, it's not too early to start making Halloween plans. Chef-owner Ruth Levine of Bistro 185 is offering a tempting option in her October 31 Witch's Brew Dinner. The adults-only celebration features a five-course menu that that starts with "Deep Down Underground" soup — celery root, potatoes, and parsnips with creme fraiche — and concludes with "Pumpkin Whoopie Pie." In between, you'll find courses like "Vampire Tenderloin Stake," "Black and Orange Shrimp Pasta," and a baby spinach salad. Each course comes paired with a suitably creepy sounding cocktail or libation: Freak Show Cabernet, Bobbing for Eyeballs, or Witches Cackle among them.

Levine says she likes to focus on the entertainment component of her menus. "This is a tongue-in-cheek way for us to celebrate what is supposed to be a children's holiday with great food, wine, and spirits," she says.

Cost for the Halloween dinner is $55 plus tax and tip. Make reservations by phone at 216-481-9635 and have your credit card handy: Advance payment is required. Go here to learn more. —- Elaine T. Cicora
