Death Grips has taken much of the music world by storm over the past several years. Since dropping a blistering mixtape, Exmilitary, in 2011, the punk-hop trio has thrown down a melange of angry poetry, avant-garde beats and multifaceted instrumentation.
Unfortunately, drummer Zach Hill is currently holed up in Los Angeles as he films and edits an upcoming movie. His manic rhythm work was missed in Cleveland, though Flatlander's sampling deftly injected the music with Hill-like percussion. Death Grips will score the upcoming film with new music. (The band is also recording their third album.)
Nonetheless, fans of all sorts of genres were treated to a thrilling show last night. The gig opened with a thunderous take on "Guillotine," complete with *intense* bass and MC Ride's patent growl. From there, the guys simply did not let up. They played for nearly an hour straight, with not a second wasted on banter or breaks of any kind. Death Grips, true to form, were not fucking around.
Given all the news, Death Grips is absolutely worth checking out throughout the rest of the year. Ideally, they'll be back in town before you know it - with fresh music and, of course, Hill back on the drum kit.
