If you missed last night's Indians game, it's enough to know that the Tribe got walloped
by their Ohio rivals. The Reds scored nine runs and held Indians' hitters to only two, thanks to a complete-game effort from on-again off-again ace Johnny Cueto.
But the Indians were mounting a late-inning rally when a freak play stalled the momentum. With runners on first and second and nobody out, Yan Gomes smacked a double to right field, scoring Lord Chiz with ease.
As the cutoff throw from right zoomed into the infield, so too did an errant throw from the Reds' bullpen, a wild pitch (courtesy of reliever Jumbo Diaz, whose first name used to be much less ironic
) off the catcher's glove and into center.
Poor David Murphy, having reached third from first safely, saw the second
ball and assumed it was in play. He figured he could score and took a sizable lead from third. SS Zack Cozart (with live
ball in hand) and seeing what looked like a totally imprudent and/or confused Murphy, fired a throw to 3B Ramon Santiago who applied the tag.
Murphy could do little but shake his head and point to the outfield in disbelief. Here's the video evidence.
