Located just west of downtown, Kalman and Pabst Photo Group is a private studio for local photo and media professionals. It’s not regularly open to the public, but it’s the venue  for Ingenuity’s 4th Annual Bal Ingénieux, which takes place from 6 p.m to 1 a.m. on Saturday, May 16. With 18,000 square feet of “nooks and crannies,” the venue will be decorated to match the historical Kokoon Club of Cleveland’s past. Active from the ‘20s to the ‘40s, the avant-garde modern art club based on New York’s Kit Kat Club hosted infamous costume balls. Ingenuity’s Bal Ingénieux pays homage to that tradition and also funds the annual IngenuityFest, an annual arts and culture event that takes place in the fall.

Local acts slated to perform at Bal Ingénieux include the Ernie Krivda Quartet, Miss Alexandra Huntington, the Neil Chastain Quartet, Mister Bradley P, DJ Red I and the Secret Soul Club. Cleveland Tango School, Case Western Reserve University Swing Club, the Performing Arts Entertainment Group and Verb Ballets will also be on hand as will members of the Cirque Ingénieux, illusionist Ray Raymond, sideshow entertainer Lita Rabbit and comedian Mike Polk and Last Call Cleveland.

“This year, we want to welcome all of Cleveland into our ‘house’ to see what we’re doing,” says Program Director Emily Appelbaum in a press release. “We want to start a conversation, and having well-known Clevelanders join in the programming is really our way of bringing everyone to the table. Everyone should feel like they’re ‘part of the act.’ Ingenuity isn’t about audience and performer, it’s about what all of us – together – can create." For the second year in a row, the Bal also features a costume contest. Ingenuity Executive Director, Paula Grooms, says the Bal is “one of the most unique and fun events of the year, and we’re trying to open it up to more people than ever before – all ticket levels almost sold out last year, so be sure to order them soon.”

Ticket levels start at $20 for the Bohemian level ($25 at the door, 10 p.m. entry) and $10 to cover materials if guests choose to attend the pre-party workshop from 7 to 10 p.m.). Doors open at 6 pm for dinner and live entertainment to Premier, VIP and Corporate guests ($150 to $200, corporate tables $1500). If you show up for desserts and cocktails at 8 p.m., those tickets will cost $75. All ticket levels and benefits can be found on Eventbrite. The event will also include a silent auction, art for sale, an art installation by Creative Fusion artist Alexandru Patatics, and works by Dairell Medrano, Valerie Mayen of Yellow Cake and other Cleveland locals.
