Once a year, four established drawing groups gather together for an evening of competitive live drawing in front of a public audience. These talented local artists battle against each other and the clock in a variety of oddly-themed contests. Now in its seventh incarnation, Drawn & Quartered takes place in a different venue each year
. This time, the exciting event takes place at HEDGE Gallery as part of Third Friday festivities at 78th Street Studios.
HEDGE Gallery’s walls will feature an exhibition of works by participating artists, curated by HEDGE Gallery owner Hilary Gent. A reception for the exhibition will begin at 5 p.m., Friday, May 15. The Drawn & Quartered event itself will begin at 7 p.m. The event will run until 9 p.m.
“Drawn & Quartered was founded seven years ago by Deb Steytler and Juan Quirarte of The Murray Hill Life Drawing Group with the essential cooperation of Jason Tilk and Aaron Erb of Dr. Sketchy, George Kocar of the Northern Ohio Illustrators Society, Tim Herron of The Pretentious Tremont Artists and Dana Depew of Asterisk Gallery," explains Gent. “Initially hosted by Asterisk in Tremont the event found its way to Walleye Gallery in Gordon Square, The Loren Naji Studio and Gallery in Ohio City, The Great Lakes Brewery Tasting Room, also in Ohio City, and this year finds its home at HEDGE Gallery in the 78th Street Studios as part of the May 15th Third Friday.”
She continues, “This year Dr. Sketchy Cleveland, The Murray Hill Life Drawing Group, N.O.I.S. (Northern Ohio Illustrators Society) and The West Side Markers will step onto the canvas (and drawing pads.) Jordan Davis will act as our Master of Ceremonies. Davis has served as ‘Mr. EmCee’ at Cleveland Public Theatre's vaudeville shows, performed at the International Poetry Slam and the Cleveland Performance Art Festival, and has been in several bands. Duece Dance will supply our ‘movement’ models and Dot King will be our featured long-pose model and we will have several ‘guest’ and audience models.”
A collection of special guest celebrity judges, as well as randomly selected audience members will award points after each event. Themes include a Blind Contour (artists cannot look at their paper as they draw), Gesture, Best Likeness (of audience model), Moving Model, Non-Dominant Hand, Tandem Drawing (switching with a partner), Caricature (audience model), Extreme Angle and the 90-minute Long Pose featuring one model.
Drawn & Quartered is always one of the most fun and unique events of the year. Be sure to stop by HEDGE Gallery this Friday.
