Artwood Derby Returns to SPACES This Weekend

We’ve all heard of the Pinewood Derby, but do you know about the Artwood Derby?

The Artwood Derby is back at SPACES! From 6 to 8 p.m. this Saturday, June 6, SPACES invites artists and non-artists (ages 5 and up) to create their own custom car (kits, as well as a drink ticket, are included with the entry fee). Decorate the cars however you’d like – the weirder the better.

From the organizers: “This is an all ages event, where artistry and Americana get squished into a five-ounce block of wood, to celebrate SPACES' 37th anniversary. Expect good-looking cars that go nowhere, kids with racers faster than yours, and hopefully some light sabotage, in Cleveland's most creative competition. Though we award the Fastest racer with the SPACES Cup, we actually value aesthetics and concept over speed, and also award trophies for Best in Show, Corniest, and Hottest Mess.”

The Artwood Derby track is approximately 36 feet long, with a four-foot drop. Celebrity announcers will call the races, cameras will capture photo finishes, and results will be tallied live. All racers are invited to pick up a kit early and display their cars inside SPACES before the event.

This year, SPACES has made an effort to help female racers kick the boys’ butts.

“We realized that in all four previous Artwood Derbies, young boys have won the Fastest category. So, this year, we developed a Girl Power sponsorship opportunity for anyone who wanted to help get free Artwood Derby car kits in the hands of underserved young girls, through our partner organization, West Side Community House. The girl racers were invited to participate in our Make It Go Fast! workshop, taught by Michael Loderstedt (father of a previous Fastest category winner), covering the fundamental physics and engineering skills behind gravity racing.”

Stop by SPACES today to pick up your kit and start decorating your car. Visit spacesgallery.org or call 216-621-2314 for more information.

Entry is $8; $5 for Season Pass members and $3 for anyone racing an “Old Skool” Artwood Derby car from a previous year’s event.
