Lakewood's Ice Cream Joy Serves Up Unique Flavors, Sustainable Flair

It's summer which means ice cream is wiggling its way up into the "major food group" category,  often becoming a meal in itself for us several times a week.

With all of the usual hotspots (Mitchell's, Mason's Creamery, Sweet Moses) pre-programmed into our GPS, we're looking forward to adding another haunt to our summertime hit list: Ice Cream Joy.

The brainchild of Cleveland native Marissa Flynn, Ice Cream Joy opened quietly in Lakewood last month, serving up handmade, locally sourced ice creams, sorbets, and frozen ices. Her plan, she said in a recent self-penned article, is to supplement Cleveland's current ice cream scene with unique flavors such as Hazelnut Malt, White Chocolate Balsamic, and vegan Cayenne Sweet Potato Pecan. Flavors will appear on a rotating basis, Flynn said, since each variety is made in small batches and from scratch in her Madison Avenue shop.

A focus on sustainability is also a priority, and Flynn locally corrals as many ingredients as she can. "I use Wholesome Valley Farms via Fresh Fork Market for grass-fed milk and cream, radiCLE Roots for pure and flavored nut milks for vegan flavors, Fear's Confections for chocolate, [and] Old City Soda for (you guessed it) sodas," she said.

A Cute Little Ice Cream Bowl Club is also in the works — Flynn will work with area artists to supply bowls for her shop, which customers can buy and then bring with them to each visit for a discount on ice cream.

While the shop is already up and running (hours are Monday - Friday, 5 - 9 p.m., Saturday, 12 - 9 p.m., and 12 - 7 p.m. on Sunday), a grand opening is in the works for June 20.
