This weekend's fireworks display at Crocker Park was cut short after a mishap sent fireworks spiraling into the crowd, injuring nine people and scaring the living daylights out of dozens more.
Officials say a box of fireworks overturned and fired into the audience just after the annual display started on Sunday evening around 10 p.m. Injuries — thank God — were minor and no one was taken to the hospital.
Crocker Park administrators posted this statement on their Facebook page about 40 minutes after the incident:
Event update: The fireworks incident is under investigation. We will share more details as soon as they become available.Posted by Crocker Park on Sunday, June 28, 2015
30 minutes prior, however, Crocker Park personnel released a post on Facebook blaming high winds for the cancellation of the Sunday night event. The post caused a flurry of social media backlash and has since been deleted.
Some video footage of the incident is currently circulating around the interwebs, including this one from attendee Kerri Russell
Thank you for installing a permanent fear of fireworks after almost being burned by them.. I don't think I'll ever return..Posted by Keri Russell on Sunday, June 28, 2015
The incident is still under investigation.
