Start your Halloween weekend at Bottlehouse Brewery for ARTFUL's Gods and Monsters this Friday, Oct. 30, at 8 p.m. This Halloween party and fundraiser features food, raffles, art, music by DJ Jared Plotts, a costume contest, live drawing activities from Dr. Sketchy and exquisite corpse collaborations hosted by Blick Art Materials’ Justin Will.
“Over the last couple of months we have worked to plan a fun event where people could put their best creative foot forward,” says ARTFUL Director and Board President Brady Dindia. “The BottleHouse Brewery has graciously agreed to host our event and we’re happy to say that Dr. Sketchy Cleveland jumped at the opportunity to partner up with us, as well as Blick Art Materials in Cleveland Heights. Dr. Sketchy will be there from 9 to 11 p.m. with their model posing in crazy outfits and they will be handing prizes for the drawings that the audience creates. Justin Will from Blick Art Materials will be working the crowd and guiding them through Exquisite Corpse drawings which will be displayed upon completion. ARTFUL is also providing an array of food from The Mad Greek, a DJ, and there will be raffles and a prize for the best costume. This is a great opportunity for people to kick off their Halloween weekend with fun and creativity, all while supporting a good cause.”
ARTFUL is a new organization comprised of artists, educators, attorneys and local business owners. Their goal is to create studio and exhibition space in Cleveland Heights, which was chosen after the group discovered that it housed the largest concentration of artists in Northeast Ohio.
“ARTFUL began as an idea amongst friends back in February or March,” Dindia says. “With Shannon Morris taking the reigns, she created a group page and began reaching out to the Heights community at large to gauge their interest in developing a location that would perhaps house artist studios, a working gallery, classroom spaces and entertainment spaces. It quickly became clear that there was strong interest from artists, community members and local businesses to see this develop. With that, we became focused and developed a team to help see this through."
She continues: “ARTFUL now consists of 8 board members, and Shannon is the executive director. Our initial research uncovered that Cleveland Heights is home to the greatest concentration of people within Cuyahoga County who consider themselves to be making their living as artists. If you incorporate the surrounding suburbs, like Shaker Heights, Beachwood, University Heights, etc., that number becomes even bigger. With little to no working studio spaces where artists can convene in the Heights, we aim to fill that void. But our mission is not only to develop a group of working studio spaces, it is also to help nurture and educate artists in their efforts to build a successful business. It is our belief that this venture will also benefit the community at large and other local businesses. A rich and diverse arts and culture scene makes communities more vibrant and appealing. The Heights has a long tradition of being strong supporters of greater Cleveland’s arts and culture scene, as well as an active participant, and ARTFUL will be a continuation of this legacy.”
Tickets are $20, and must be purchased in advance. All proceeds will be applied to their matching grant challenge to help Artful secure a home for itself and its artists. 21 and older.
“Just this week, ARTFUL submitted our paperwork to file for our federal non-profit status,” Dindia says. “We are moving forward with negotiations with local property owners in the hopes that we are able to come to an agreement for a long term lease for the Medusa Building at the corner of Lee Rd. and Monticello Blvd. We also have received a proposal for a $25,000 matching grant challenge. If ARTFUL is successful in raising $25,000 on our own, we will then receive an additional $25,000 towards the development of our space. Our forward momentum is strong, and we are moving in a timely and responsible fashion. Until we receive our full non-profit status, we are focused on our small, community oriented fundraisers like our upcoming Gods & Monsters Halloween Fundraiser and Party on Oct. 30th.”
