The College of Wooster – the leafy liberal arts school parked down in the Wayne County seat – is in freak-out mode today after administrators fielded not one but two bomb threats in the last 12 hours. Classes have been canceled, and academic buildings are on lockdown as law enforcement assesses the situation.
The first threat was discovered last night, according to school authorities. Newsnet5 reports
that a handwritten note was found threatening a school library. All three of Wooster’s libraries were then evacuated. Wooster police “conducted a thorough search of the buildings using explosive detective canine units,” so says a university statement. The all-clear was given at 5:30 a.m.
Then this morning around 9 a.m., the college received another threat. This time, two academic halls — Kauke Hall and Taylor Hall – were named as targets. It's unclear whether the second threats were also made in writing or in some other way.
According to a student on campus who asked not to be identified, kids learned of the scare this morning. “The bomb threat happened in the middle of classes and we got evacuated.” The student says he was waiting in a hallway when an announcement came blaring over the intercom to clear the building, that this wasn’t a drill.
“The residence halls are safe apparently but all classes are canceled,” he says.
The Wooster student notes it’s the last week of classes before semester finals. “People are pissed because it’s a big work week," he adds. "Pissed/shocked."
This morning John Hopkins, a spokesman for the college, posted the following statement online:
WOOSTER, Dec. 7, 2015 – Last night the college received a bomb threat directed against our libraries. Our Security and Protective Services officers immediately evacuated all three libraries and notified the Wooster police who conducted a thorough search of the buildings using explosive detection canine units. Nothing was found during their sweep of the buildings and a follow-up notification to that effect went out to campus at approximately 5:30 a.m.
At approximately 9:15 a.m. this morning, a second bomb threat was received, this one naming Taylor and Kauke halls. Both have been evacuated. All classes on campus today are being cancelled and academic buildings closed. Lowry Center and Scot Center will remain open with security officers at the entrance.
Wooster police are on the scene and the investigation is ongoing.
We will provide more information as we have it.
The ol’ bomb-threat-during-finals trick is a pretty old one in the annals of sick campus humor/douchery. Unfortunately, with what’s going on in the world, you never can be sure now what’s legit and what’s bullshit. We’ll keep you posted with updates.
