Since 2008, Lakeland Community College has hosted annual exhibitions dedicated to the efforts of local and regional female artists. In honor of Women’s History Month, these shows are “by women, for women and about women." From Woman IX is the biggest and most ambitious effort to date. Every year, these exhibitions at the Gallery at Lakeland get bigger and better.

"This year I have invited 12 new artists to the From WOMAN IX exhibition, including the abstract acrylic artworks of Jenn Crisan from Sharon, Pa.,” Gallery Coordinator Mary Urbas explains. “Also new this year is a mixed media installation by Clare Murray Adams, from Southington, Ohio, made of sheer silk organza dresses from her In Her Closet series.”

She elaborates: “Betty Skufca is the artist who is artwork is featured on the postcard and also on the cover of the gallery directory/tour brochure I compiled. Betty is 87 years young and paints in her studio every day. She gave me six oil paintings to display. You'll recognize the characteristic style of her version of pointillism. She uses a tiny detail brush to painstakingly apply the multiple layer upon layer of colored dots, to create such luminous surfaces incorporated into her conceptual compositions. She is quite an inspiration!"

More than 30 local and regional women artists from Northeast and Central Ohio, Pennsylvania and Indiana will exhibit nearly 150 works created in a variety of media, including oil, acrylic, watercolor and encaustic painting, drawing, collage, textiles, soft sculpture, weaving, jewelry, glass mosaic, porcelain cellulose clay sculpture, ceramic sculpture, assemblage art and mixed media.

The full lineup includes: Clare Murray Adams, Barbara Bachtell, Jenn Crisan, Gail Crum, Benita Cullinan, Lynn M. Forbes, Forlorn Dolls (Samantha Meyers), Keri Gortz, Melissa Harris, Patricia Swearingen Hecker, Laurel Herbold, Leslie Edwards Humez, Tricia Kaman, Stanka Kordic, Suzan Kraus, Helen Lardner, Theresa Loomis, Beth Nash, Karen Petkovic, Cathy Rogers, Lisa Ruschman, Ana Luisa Sanchez, Sandy Shelenberger, Susan Shie, Deborah Silver, Lorelei Skizenta, Betty Skufca, Marilyn Szalay, Judy Takacs, Gwen Waight, Theresa Yondo, JenMarie Zeleznak, Jaymi Zents and Evie Zimmer.

Stop by the Gallery at Lakeland this Sunday, March 6, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. for the artist reception and the Annual Woman of Achievement Awards Ceremony (Awards Ceremony starts at 2 p.m.). From WOMAN IX remains on view through March.

Additionally, throughout the month of March, local galleries and studios will be hosting all-women exhibitions highlighting the work of local and regional female artists. This year, more than 50 venues are participating. The effort has grown exponentially in its just three short years. Last year featured nearly 40 venues, after an initial effort of 16 in 2014.

For too long throughout history, female artists were denied access to education and opportunities due to the arrogance and ignorance of their male counterparts. This collaborative effort is one of the largest and most ambitious of its kind ever in our region. Additionally, the scale and scope of this regional gallery tour helps eliminate the artificial west/east barriers of Northeast Ohio. These events help unite us as a community. So be sure to mark your calendars, map out your route and support the efforts of our region’s extremely talented ladies.
