Akron-based singer-songwriter Ryan Humbert is one of Northeast Ohio’s most active musicians. If he’s not playing solo dates, he’s paying tribute to icons such as Roy Orbison and Bob Dylan with large, extravagant shows. And that’s not to mention his elaborate Christmas concerts.

Somehow, he’s found time to record a new album with his side project, Shooter Sharp & the Shootouts. In addition to Humbert, the group features guitarist Brian Poston, bassist Dan Nauss and drummer Dylan Gomez. The band’s self-titled debut arrives today. You can purchase it on the band's website and at upcoming shows.

To coincide with the album's release, ten different media outlets throughout Northeast Ohio will each exclusively debut a different track from the album on their respective websites. Here's a link to our exclusive track, a cover of the Elvis Costello tune "The Big Light."

“A lot of people don’t know that Elvis Costello has a deep love for country music," says Humbert of "The Big Light." "We always enjoy playing this one live — it’s just plain fun. Johnny Cash also recorded it for one of his "lost" albums in the '80s. I knew our cover of it would be a fun addition to the album.”

Recorded at Crushtone Studios in Cleveland with award-winning engineer Jim Stewart in April, the album is a collaborative effort as local players such as Al Moss (pedal steel) and Bill Lestock (mandolin, violin) as well as Humbert’s longtime singing partner Emily Bates perform on it. The disc includes renditions of songs made famous by Mickey Newbury, Conway Twitty, Patsy Cline, and Eddy Arnold.

"Being someone who never really listened to country music, it's really interesting to talk to so many people like me who, because of Shooter Sharp & the Shootouts, have started to give country a second chance," says Gomez in a press release.
