Buckeye Brewfest to Debut at This Year’s National Hamburger Festival

[image-1]In our humble opinion, Northeast Ohio can’t have too many beer festivals. So we're excited that this year's National Hamburger Festival will introduce Buckeye Brewfest, a one-day Ohio beer festival included with the cost of admission to National Hamburger Fest.

The beer festival will feature 10 Ohio-based breweries from Akron (Thirsty Dog Brewing Co., Ohio Brewing Company), Cleveland (Buckeye Brewing Co., Great Lakes Brewing Company, Spider Monkey, Griffin Cider Works, Market Garden Brewery), Columbus (Columbus Brewing Company), Cincinnati (Moerlein Lagers & Ales, Mt. Carmel Brewing Company) and Medina (Lager Heads Brewing Co.).

In addition to Ohio-based breweries, festivalgoers can also try Leinenkugel’s Big Eddy Royal Nektar (Chippewa Falls, WI), Shiner Beer’s Wicked Ram IPA and Prickly Pear (Shiner, TX), Fireman’s Brew Blonde, Brunette and Redhead (Canoga Park, CA), and beers from Horny Goat Brewing Company (Milwaukee, WI).

Now in its 11th year, the National Hamburger Festival takes place on Aug. 13 and 14 at Akron’s Lock 3. Buckeye Brewfest will take place during the festival on Aug. 14. Tickets are $5.

“Between the increased economic growth in the city to the star power emanating from hometown hero Lebron James, we’re seeing a huge uptick in Akron pride,” says festival founder Drew Cerza in a press release. “So, this year, the National Hamburger Festival is really focused on celebrating Akron and all of Ohio by showcasing independent eateries and locally brewed craft beer.”

Independently owned and operated eateries ranging from perennial favorite Menches Bros. to the new-school food truck Square Scullery will serve up the grub at this year’s event.

Activities include “Bobbing for Burgers,” a contest that involves diving head-first into a kiddy pool filled with ketchup to fish for burger patties, and the Ohio Hamburger Eating Championship, during which eight local eaters will compete to see who can consume the most one-pound burgers in just 10 minutes.

Bands will perform over the course of the weekend as well, and Fleetwood Mac Mania, a tribute to Fleetwood Mac, will headline on Saturday night.
