Guide To Kulchur, your neighborhood indie bookstore/co-op/zine shop.
Guide to Kulchur, the Detroit-Shoreway bookstore and co-op, is closing its doors. Owner and curator RA Washington
announced on his Facebook page that Sunday will be the indie shop's last day. He described the decision as an "emergency measure" due to financial concerns.
"We’ve fought to keep the doors open," he wrote, "and now we must close them in an effort to continue our work bringing Books 2 Prisoners all over Ohio, and to continue the amazing work of GTK Press, which in its first year published 15 books of non fiction, poetry and fiction... and collaborated with the City Club to publish a document of dialogue called A Race Anthology: Dispatches and Artifacts From A Segregated City.
The store, which relocated last year
from its location on W. 65th street, next to the Capitol Theatre, to Detroit and W. 59th, regularly hosted events, concerts and conversations in a small basement space. It served as a hub for radical conversation and literary experimentation.
Washington said that he had already considered how Guide to Kulchur would evolve, as its mission has changed and expanded.
"We are proud of what we have been able to accomplish, and excited to grow," he wrote.
