Cincinnati-born R&B singer Arin Ray moved to Los Angeles right after finishing high school. He had dreams of making it in the music business, but success didn't come overnight.

After a stint on The X Factor, he devoted himself to songwriting. Artists such as Chris Brown and Nicki Minaj took notice, and they've each recorded some of his tunes.

After releasing last year's Phases, a collection of carefully crafted tunes that recall R&B greats such as Usher and D'Angelo, Ray is preparing to issue his first full-length. The forthcoming album's single, the slo-mo ballad "We Ain't Homies," has already gotten extensive radio airplay. It features ratcheting percussion and a somber keyboard riff.

We caught up with Ray at his hotel room earlier today. He performs tonight at the Q as part of the 107.9 Summer Jam.
