There's certainly a time to watch Christmas classics like Elf and It's a Wonderful Life while wrapped up in blankets on your own couch, and also a time to catch the flicks with fellow fans in a public setting. This December, the Akron Civic Theatre, 182 S. Main St., offers the latter.

First up is Elf on Saturday, Dec. 9 at 2:30 p.m. The classic tale of Buddy the Elf going to Manhattan to find his father is still as funny as it was in 2003 —  and this time elf costumes are encouraged. The showing is part of Akron's ELFcon, a party at the downtown Lock 3 outdoor park. The event, which features the four elf food groups, ice skating, a holiday sing-along and putt-putt, runs from noon to 8 p.m.

Then Frank Capra's masterpiece It's a Wonderful Life plays Friday, Dec. 15 at 7:30 p.m. No costumes are necessary here, but be sure to bring a couple tissues. That final scene continues to bring the waterworks year after year.

Best of all, free popcorn will be offered at both free showings, which do require tickets. Check here for additional screening information.
