Draylen Mason was getting ready for the day when a package bomb exploded in his family's Austin, Texas, home earlier this month, killing him and injuring his mother. The 17-year-old was one of two victims in a string of vicious bombings in the city.
While Mason was planning to study music at the University of Texas, where he was already accepted, the bassist would have found out last Friday that he was accepted into the prestigious Oberlin Conservatory of Music.
Oberlin admissions director, Michael Manderen, told
the Associated Press that the decision was made prior to Mason's death.
Mason, who attended East Austin College Prep, played in a variety of orchestras as well as jazz and mariachi groups. BuzzFeed News offered up a beautiful tribute here.
Last week, Texas police reported
that after a chase, the suspected bomber, Mark Anthony Conditt, detonated a bomb in his own car, killing himself.
East Austin College Prep is hosting a public candlelight vigil for Mason tomorrow evening.
