A new digital newsroom launching in Youngstown as part of a project sponsored by Google and the McClatchy newspaper chain will be called Mahoning Matters
and will be staffed by reporters and editors from the Youngstown Vindicator,
which published its final edition Aug. 31.
The name of the new publication, wrote Google's Mandy Jenkins in an email, "reflects both what we’ll cover and what we believe: The Mahoning Valley matters. Youngstown matters. Local news matters."
Helming the fledgling newsroom will be Vindicator
managing editor Mark Sweetwood, (the man on the right in the image above). Reporters Justin Dennis and Jess Hardin will work under him.
"This team’s experience and deep knowledge of the area will be invaluable in getting Mahoning Matters
up and running," Jenkins wrote.
Hardin was among the recipients of grant dollars from the Center for Community Solutions for reporting on health and human services issues in the region. Her first piece sponsored by the grant, on the state of ambulance services in the Mahoning Valley, was published last week
